Step Team Mission Statement

The Great Oak High School Step Team program since 2004 has provided and developed an environment that allows all students the opportunity to enrich their high school experience through participation and inclusion of this team, which is competitive at local, state and national level. We take pride in providing a unique learning environment with equitable participation of its students to develop their leadership potential. It is our goal to enhance each individual student's intellectual, physical, social, moral and cultural development, while conducting all of its activities with honesty and integrity in accordance with the principles of good sportsmanship and ethical conduct.

What is Step?

Stepping was originated in Africa.  Many western tribes did a tribal dance or step to celebrate something big. Stepping is a complex performance that melds folk traditions with popular culture and involves synchronized percussive movement, singing, speaking, chanting and drama. Most college campuses engage in stepping/stomping by African American fraternities and sororities: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Phi Beta Sigma, Omega Phi Psi, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Iota Phi Theta and Sigma Gamma Rho. Stepping can be fun and challenging at the same time.
